(NKJV) ~ “LORD, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will prepare their heart; You will cause Your ear to hear, to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may oppress no more.”
(ESV) ~ “O LORD, You hear the desire of the afflicted; You will strengthen their heart; You will incline Your ear to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more.”
I was having a hard time deciding between the NKJV and the ESV today so I decided to write them both out and let y’all pick. But just as I was reading this morning, I found it interesting the psalmist’s choice of words when he says, “You will prepare/strengthen THEIR HEART”. At first glance, it looked as though there was a mistake in pronoun agreement. Normally, if you have two or more people the things they possess would also be plural. Anything else would be looked on as a mistake. Unless the different things have been joined together into the same thing. The people are still individuals, but their decision has been made one. So in this case, the plural, ”their” would require multiple hearts except for one thing; unity.
When we – as believers – pray as one, with one purpose and goal in mind our hearts come together into one heart. The only problem with that is, it can be really difficult to pray in unity. Unity doesn’t work unless everyone does and it is a lot of work. Because people don’t always agree, there are different opinions, different approaches, different strategies, and different people in general. It is extremely difficult to get people ”on the same page”. However, it is not impossible, in the ESV it says that GOD will strengthen our heart. Meaning, He will strengthen our resolve, He will help us work in unity.
The point of all this is, we have to be unified in our goal before it will ever start happening. If the church is so busy fighting over silly little things that don’t really matter in the Kingdom, we are never going to get anywhere. Why? Because we are still stuck on the carpet color and how to organize chairs instead of focusing on, “Hey! There are people out there who are hurting! How are we going to help them?” But when we move our focus off of what we want, and on to what GOD wants, that’s when things start to happen because when we come together with one heart, GOD hears our prayers and Justice is released. So whether it comes easy, or whether you have to work on it, practice walking in unity with the people you are surrounded with and see what GOD does with it.
