Calling Us Closer

Matthew 11:28-29 NASB

“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

This world seems to be flying at about a million miles an hour. The truth is, it’s really only moving at about 67,000 miles per hour, but that is close enough. With our phones buzzing and so many things vying for our attention at the same time, it can be difficult to find the time to focus on what is important.

When we feel overwhelmed, it is important to remember, that our relationships with God aren’t just another obligation, they are an invitation to rest. We are completely accepted and welcomed in the Presence of God. There is no need to perform or have everything together, in fact, it is easier if you just let yourself be real in your time with God.

As you spend more time with God – through prayer and reading His Word – you will come to know Him more deeply. The closer you get to God, the more comfortable you will feel being vulnerable with Him. Once you have established that feeling of safety, you will be able to truly process the things that you go through in life. Not just writing them in a journal, venting to a friend, or internalizing them, you will be able to process them and begin to heal from the various problems and trials you face in life.

God is always willing to listen, no matter the distance between you and God, He is calling you to come nearer. The only question that remains is, will you listen?

Check Your Source

1 John 5:11-12 NASB

“And the testimony is this, that God has given us etenal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.”

Jesus should be the enter life source of our lives. In John 15, Jesus clearly says that without Him we can do nothing. That is both reassuring and devastating. We so often try to strike out on our own and do things in our own strength and we usually end up failing miserably. The good news is, when we fail (not if), we can always come back to Jesus and return to the strength only He can provide.

It doesn’t really matter what your experience is, or even what you think you are good at; all that really matters is what Jesus gives you the power to do. God has called each and every one of us to do something significant. You were not created for mediocrity, you were made to be a powerhouse in the Kingdom, but you have to be willing to go outside your comfort zone.

When we operate in our comfort zones, that is when we make mistakes; but – more importantly – nothing amazing is ever accomplished because we are doing what we can do and we need God to do what only He can do. People say, “be the change you wish to see in the world”, and while I don’t disagree with that, we need to be making the changes that God calls us to make. If our efforts are based in striving and our own performance, we will be like a cartoon character with our legs flying, but no forward motion. But, if we rest in Jesus, the One who can do all things, THEN – and only then – will we begin to see the world change.

Hope Fixed on Him

1 John 3:2-3 NASB

“Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.”

Isn’t it nice to know that we don’t need to have everything figured out in life? This verse is very comforting to me because, so much of the time, it can feel as if we have more questions than answers, but we still have to make important decisions. How good it is to now, that no matter what circumstances we face, God has already planned for them.

As scary as it can be, to stare down the unknown and stand your ground, we can always have the confidence that no matter what happens, God has already planned it out for us. We don’t need to know all the variables, because we know the important one. At the end of the day, we will be joining God in Heaven, worshiping and declaring his goodness.

Today, if decisions come flying at you, and you feel unprepared and stressed out, take a moment to remember what the end will be. Every step we take has already been planned by God. And in those times when we make a wrong turn, God is already re-routing you to get you back to where He wants you to be. Plus, there’s no way you could mess up His plan; you’re just not the powerful. So you can rest in knowing, that God knows what He is doing, and you’re gonna make it.
